The New Hampshire Democratic and Republican parties are sparring over school accountability in new radio ads. The G-O-P is urging legislators to override Governor Jeanne Shaheen's veto of a school accountability plan. They say Shaheen rejected the bill because it didn't allow the state to takeover schools. Democrats - meanwhile - are countering with their own ad. They say Republicans are not as concerned with school accountability, as they are with attacking the governor and making political gain.

Up to 500 families who have not been able to buy a home may now be able to do so. That's thanks to a new program making 45 million dollars available for home mortgages in the granite state.
It's provided by the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority. Earlier this evening I spoke with Executive Director Claira Mornier about the eligibility guidelines.

It was a positive day for most of the major market averages, thanks in part to an advance led by computer chip stocks. As a result of lingering economic uncertainty, the markets did not maintain the day's highs.

If you have a respiratory problem, or you were doing any kind of physical acitivity outdoors in Rockingham County today, you may have noticed it was a little more difficult to catch your breath.
Air pollution reached unhealthy levels on the seacoast today. Public health officials were cautioning residents and visitors, especially people with respiratory problems, not to stay outside for long. Conditions are expected to improve tomorrow as cleaner air moves in.

Here's some good news when it comes to gypsy moths.
The moths defoliate trees just about every ten years. And the last infestation here in the granite state was in the early 90's - so you might think we're due. But according to one forest health specialist - gypsy moths may be bypassing New Hampshire this time around. She says there are few egg masses. And one reason may be the presence of a fungus which is a natural killer of gypsy moths.

If you've passed by a health clinic or hospital, or read a parenting magazine, you may have noticed signs promoting this as World Breastfeeding week.
August first through the seventh has been set aside to get the word out about breasfeeding. Especially in the U.S. where many women choose to bottle feed their newborns.
Health organizations worldwide agree that Breast Milk is best for babies.
Recently I was joined in studio by Karla Deinstadt of Dover pediatricts and Kathleen Routhier of Wentworth Douglass hospital. Both are lactation consultants who talked about the numbers and more.

A global organization called La Leche League is dedicated to the promotion of breastfeeding.
To find a group in your area, call the New Hampshire referral number at 800-553-3866 extension 7075.
The line is supported by Concord hospital.
If you want to meet La Leche League members and supporters, you can attend their "Walk for Breastfeeding" in Manchester this Saturday, August 4th, 10am at the Livingston Park playground.
And finally, if you want a video resource, log onto eaglevideo-dot-com for a preview of a video on the whys of breastfeeding.
